Warning: Abortion Pills Do Not Work on Ectopic Pregnancies

Abortion pills do not work on ectopic pregnancies because the abortion pill only removes what is inside the uterus. With ectopic pregnancies, the fetus is outside the uterus. It’s important to get an ultrasound before you take the abortion pill to know the location of the fetus.

Let’s explain why

What: An ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancy) is growing in the wrong place. While the baby normally grows inside the uterus, an ectopic pregnancy can be in the fallopian tube (most common type), ovary, cervix, or the abdominal cavity (belly).
Why: Most often, no cause can be determined, and nothing could have been done to prevent an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy.

Below are risk factors that can increase the likelihood of ectopic pregnancy.

  • Prior ectopic pregnancy
  • Tubal surgery or tubal ligation
  • Prior sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as Gonorrhea or Chlamydia
  • Pregnancy while IUD is present in the uterus

How Ectopic Pregnancies Are Diagnosed: An ectopic pregnancy is often not easy or clear to diagnose. Many times, a series of blood tests and/or ultrasounds must be performed before diagnosis is certain.

What to Look For:

  • Severe pain – especially centered on one side of the abdomen or pelvis
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or blackouts
  • Abnormally low blood pressure
  • Vaginal bleeding (may or may not be present)

What To Do:

  • If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, seek medical attention today from your provider or proceed directly to the Emergency Department.
  • If an ectopic pregnancy cannot be ruled out, monitor your symptoms. If you develop symptoms mentioned above, seek medical attention from your provider or proceed directly to the Emergency Department.

PCPlus can provide you with a medical-grade pregnancy test to confirm your pregnancy, an ultrasound to determine gestational age and the location of the fetus, and STI tests to screen for sexually transmitted infections. Please take our warning that abortion pills don’t work on ectopic pregnancies and make an appointment above or call us at 513-321-3100.
