Do you talk to yourself like a friend? It’s easy to be your own worst critic.
But self-compassion is part of your overall mental wellness! Talking to yourself like a friend means using positive self-talk like you would if a good friend was struggling. You would probably never say the negative things you say to yourself to a friend.
The words we use when we talk to ourselves can be harsh. You may be surprised at how
negative the words sound if you say them out loud. Talking positively about your strengths and weakness to yourself is a great act of love and kindness.
When a friend is going through a tough time, you aren’t going to point out their flaws, ridicule them, or mention all their past mistakes. Think of a significant relationship you have. Imagine that person has just gone through a tough time and arrived at your home needing comfort.
What would you do?
You would probably start by hugging them and telling them how much you love them.
The inner dialogue we have with ourselves on bad days can stoke negative self-talk or remind us to choose more positive self-talk.
Imagine saying each of these to someone you love who needs some compassion, love, and support.
- “Sure, you made a mistake, but you did your best. You have learned a lot from this
experience. Don’t give up; try again!”
- “I’m sorry that you are feeling down. Can I support you in some way? I would love to be there for you.”
- “You are right; that isn’t a strength of yours. But, with more practice, I know that you will get there. You can do anything you put your mind to!”
So, next time you go through a challenging time pay attention to what you’re saying to yourself. If negative self-talk starts, stop yourself, reframe your thinking, and speak to yourself like a friend. See the positive effect that comes from talking to yourself like you would to a loved one.
The most important relationship you have is the one with yourself. Next time you make a major mistake or face an embarrassing moment, be gentle with yourself and be your own best friend.
