Our viral TikTok video about a small study on whether women’s periods begin in the morning or night sparked a lot of conversation after we shared its results, which show that most women’s periods begin at night.
Our viral TikTok has 846K views after we shared a study of 86 women, finding that 70% started their periods at night or within four hours of rising. Over a thousand women commented on the video, sharing their personal experiences.

One person wrote: the pain wakes me up, so then I know it’s begun.
Another said, ” Mine is usually later afternoon/evening. I feel it coming with cramps in the morning, and it builds up and usually arrives later that day.
A third wrote: I bet it has something to do with melatonin because that’s also the most common time for labor to start.
The Data
We analyzed the 1,323 comments to see if they were comparable to the small study of 86 women. The three categories we chose for periods beginning were night/upon rising, afternoon, and evening. After tallying comments, the results confirmed the small study: 70% of women start their periods at night.
“The hundreds of women who commented showed a keen interest in the findings and were supportive of one another, showcasing a beautiful spirit of community,” described Laura Curran, Executive Director of Pregnancy Center Plus. We use social media to educate Gen Alpha and Gen Z with studies and statistics, mainly through a question-and-answer format.
