Dating Violence-About Verbal Abuse

Dating violence involves verbal abuse, financial abuse, digital abuse, and stalking. It’s a startling fact that one in three U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse in a relationship before adulthood. Verbal abuse is an issue that we all need to be aware of because, many times, it is ignored. It is helpful to be able to identify the signs of verbal abuse in relationships.

What is Verbal Abuse

Verbal abuse is when someone uses words to put you down, scare you, or try to control you. It can happen in any relationship, whether with a partner, family member, or co-worker. It’s important to recognize these signs and not dismiss them as something less serious. This knowledge can empower you to take action.

Signs of Verbal Abuse

  • You feel afraid of the person.
  • You have to walk on eggshells around them.
  • You hesitate to share personal thoughts for fear of ridicule.
  • You avoid going out in public with them due to their potential remarks.
  • You feel constantly criticized about your appearance or behavior.
  • You feel inferior or ashamed of yourself.
  • They yell, call you names, and/or curse at you and then claim you’re overly sensitive.
  • They blame you for their overreactions to minor issues.
  • They play the victim, making you feel guilty.
  • Their abusive behavior changes depending on whether others are present.

How to Handle Verbal Abuse

When dealing with verbal abuse, it’s important to recognize what’s happening and set clear boundaries. For instance, you can calmly express your feelings when you’re being mistreated or establish a rule that you will not engage in a conversation when the other person is yelling. Try to limit the time you spend around the person, and if things don’t improve, think about whether it’s time to end the relationship.

If the abuse keeps happening, it’s a good idea to come up with a plan for safely getting away. If you need help dealing with verbal abuse, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. This hotline provides confidential support, information, and resources specifically for those experiencing verbal abuse.
